How to Create a Face Mask out of a T-Shirt

The CDC is now recommending along with social distancing, that now all of us wear a protective mask when we are out in public. I understand that many of you do not have surgical masks or N95 masks at home, and given the national shortage of these products, there is a chance you may not be able to get your hands on either while the world battles COVID-19. Do not fear, there are other ways that you can protect your health and others’ health during the coronavirus crisis.

I found this website from the CDC that you can make a face mask out of a T-shirt. I imagine most of us have old T-shirts laying around the house!

Step 1: Cut the bottom seven to eight inches off the bottom of your t-shirt.

Step 2: Cut a six inch “box” out of one of the sides of this pieces to make the tie strings.

Step 3: Tie the first set of strings above your ears on top of your head, and tie the second set around your neck.

This face mask is for individuals ages 3 and up. Do not use this on people who have respiratory issues or trouble breathing, or if they cannot remove the face mask on their own.

Finally, please remember to practice social distancing routines and stay at least six feet away from others. The diagram for this DIY face mask is below:

Be Well!
